  • Conforming 720p59.94 Canon footage for a clean Slo-Mo

So I’ve got some 720p59.94 footage from a 7D. I’ve log and transfered it ProRes 422 in FCP. Question is, should I edit in 23.98 or 29.97? Because we are going to be using some clips in slo-mo. In which case we’ll use Cinema Tools to conform to 23.98 or 29.97.

Should I edit in 29.97. Will FCP just remove the appropriate frames from the 59.94 material in a 29.97 timeline? Will this then make the CT conformed slo-mo media playback along side the regular speed 59.94 material in the 29.97 timeline?

Or will this work in 23.98 as well, because they’re all compatible?

Just not sure if the regular 59.94 material can be edited in a 23.98 or 29.97 sequence and still look normal without changing the frame rate outside of FCP via Compressor. Also, I believe this is true 59.94p material not, 23.98 material shot in a 59.94 cadence, like DVCProHD can not in Native mode on P2, then you can remove duplicate frames for a 23.98 edit. The footage has new, clean frames every step through with no dup frames.

Sorry this post is a mess, but its just so confusing dealing with frame rates and wanting really good slo-mo material that CT can give by conforming the 59.94 clips to 23.98 or 29.97. Just not sure how to edit the regular speed and slo-mo material together. ughhh

Thanks Dave. I don’t have a delivery specs as this is for web content. My question is more of workflow and look.

I understand using CT will give me the silky smooth slo-mo, which I want and use all the time for other edits. Unfortunately, this time they did not shoot 23.98 material and I only have 59.94 to work with. My real question is what about the 59.94 footage at regular speed. Since they want the film look with the regular speed footage and didn’t shoot at 23.98 and only at 59.94, I’m assuming either FCP or Compressor route will simply remove the necessary frames for me to edit at 23.98. Then I’ll be able to edit in the few conformed CT clips so that the regular speed footage and slo-mo conformed clips play at the same frame rate together in the 23.98 sequence.

We really want the simulated “film look” but with not having 23.98 regular speed footage and only having 59.94 to work with, will that footage with the frames dropped out still look film-like with the blurred motion rather than the clean, crisp look of 59.94?

I do have AE. So this is something that is fairly common then? And removing frames is okay to do?

I prob could use AE but I also have loads of footage. So maybe compressor would be better as I can batch them and let them be. My short 10 sec. clip test appears to be fine. Movement looks more film-like and sort of blurred vs. clean and crisp like the original.

Yeah, sorry for not being clear on that frame rate.
