  • Conforming 2k files on FCP

Posted by Seawild on July 31, 2006 at 9:51 pm

    Hello All,

    Just kind of wondering here…

Is it possible to import/export DPX or cineon files out of FCP?

Has anyone tried to conform using proxies linked to 2k media?

I guess I’m wondering if it is possible to comform 2k without playing in realtime if I only want to export 2k’s and EDL to a DaVinci.

    Thanks, Chris

I haven’t used proxies, but I bought this component for $30, everything imported right in (though when I first tried the demo, I though the watermark was some sort of corruption, it was a huge red bar in the middle third). The files where a pretty processor heavy in FCP but not too bad. I used the send to Shake funtion and everything worked great.

    hope this helps

    Wow! Thanks Christian

Now I wonder if FCP can export an EDL that a DaVinci can read….

    Thanks so much, Chris

The heck with that, purchase Final Touch and do all the CC via XML from Final Cut Pro. It completely replaces a daVinci.

The AJA Kona 3 Board is fully capable of this type of workflow, AJA also makes a DPX to QT transcoder and the Kona 3 is fully enabled to your with 2K media at up to 15 fps.

the board also has the ability to handle a realtime downconvert of the 2K material to HD or SD with Pan and scan in addition to LUT control.

Does your DPX files have timecode in the headers ? If not the EDL is not going to be of much use.

    Hey Guys,

Well it looks like DaVinci will take any old EDL.

If I export DPX files, won’t there be time code in the header info automaticly?

Will 2k play through FCP any better if the quality is set to lowest?

    Thanks, Chris

not if your drives are not fast enough, 2k needs storage that can sustain 320 mgs a second to play back at about 15 frames.

    Gary

What about if your not using an external monitor? And just looking at the video in the viewer and don’t need anything close to realtime play back?

    Sorry Chris
Then you are not editing. (no offense)
With filmout costs starting at something around $40K (us) for 90- minutes and a new video card costing $3500. Which is going to cost you more – the hardware to do the job right the first time or another pass thru the davinci?

You need a card and really fast storage to be able to handle this much data or all you are doing is waiting, which is great if you are working by the hour, but not if you are planning to interact with your content in time enough to understand the pace and flow of the project.

Without being able to play the footage – how do you determine pacing? check the audio? follow the action?

    Hey Gary,

I’m not editing, I’m comforming. Right now it seems to me that the conforming process is needlessly complex. It should be as easy as going “on-line”. I really don’t need to watch the movie in real time just make sure that all the edits match against the chase tape.

Right now we use systems called IQ’s by Quantel. They are very powerful but a pain to use. I would like to use FCP for smaller projects that were originally cut on FCP because it is so much easyer to put everything back together.. ie opticals… Speed changes…

I am also interested in the idea of using proxies.. I have used this in AAE and works really well. I am wondering if FCP has a simular function.

    Thanks so much, Chris
