[Przemek Pyrek] “can you really preserve fields form HDV in SD”
Why not? Fields will be smaller, but will be the same number and in the same order.

[Przemek Pyrek] “I always thought that PAL must be ODD (lower”
No. Just have a look to the Sequence Presets: PAL 10b Unc. Upper first.
Compressor knows this. You can let the Frame Control OFF. Will manage properly the field order. Will output a Upper first MPG2. Same happens with HDV.
    Rafael

(OT: The curios thing is that any Interlaced TV or Monitor need to start displaying always an Upper field because the Verical Syncs starts in the first line. When you try to start displaying a Lower field, the monitor will be out of sync untill the beginnig of the next field. However this is not an issue because it happens in the very moment that you switch the monitor On. No way to see the glitch in the image )

Just to remind you. Set the the Frame Control to ON and let Field Order as Source. This will allow a better downsizing, although will increase the process time.

[Rafael Amador] “No really Jeremy. MPG2 can be Upper or Lower. As long that the player knows which field have to read first is OK.
    True

In PAL-land if you make a DVD from DV footage is Lower,
    True

and if you make from 8/10b Unc will be Upper, otherwise you would need Shift-fields etc.
    Rafael “

    No, it is still lower.
Check in FCP easy set-up for PAL DV, if you change compressior to 8 or 10 bit it is still lower field first, but as you said if you transcode to m2v with field order the “same as source”, all will be well.
BTW 1080i is not described as PAL, it is just 1080i50. PAL is always 720×576, either 4:3 or anamorphic 16:9.
1080i is 1440×1080 and is upper field first.
    Confusing isn’t it!
Use FCP’S easy set-up and avoid all this confusion.

    Cheers

    Hello,
it’s been some time since i’ve been here, but i hadn’t any acces to the Internet.

I’ve tried you’re suggestions and i’ve come to the following conclussions ;-):

    – Using “frame controls” in Compressor gives poor effects, though i must say that i’ve encoded my footage with the lowest settings possible because otherwise my iMac was processing at 1fps. I don’t say you’re wrong about using “frame controls” but it’s clearly not the best approach for me.

    – It seems Compressor really does handel fields automatically, even without any “frame controls” on.

    – The best result i got was leaving everything as it was – that means input upper field and SD PAL DVD lower field (as i always did with DV footage).

Please don’t get me wrong i appreciate all your advices very much, what i want to say is just that this is the best solution for me ;-).

    Thx again
    Przemek

    Hi Przemek,
As you say Compressor handle the field order without problems.
I didn’t suggested the Frame Control ON for the interlacing, but for the downsizing and pixels aspect change (HD to SD and Square to PAL).
Only with Frame Control ON, Compressor can works in 32b.
Sure this mean much more rendering time and not always a noticeable better picture.
You can learn from other people experience, but in the end your own experience is the most important.
You have to use the workflow that better suits your self.
    Cheers,
    rafael
