Confirmation on HDV 50i to SD DVD interlaced needed!
Posted by Przemek Pyrek on July 24, 2008 at 2:08 pmI’ve searched the forum and found some answers to my question, but i still need confirmation ’cause i’m not quiet satisfied with the quality of the image.
Is it true that when i’m exporting HDV 1080i50 timeline trought Compresor to 16:9 interlaced DVD format Compressor handles the fields properly for me?
It’s 1080i50 PAL HDV to PAL 50i SD DVD.
I basicaly need only a “Yes” answer if it’s true ;-).
Thx for the help, and sorry if it was mentioned before and i’m making a mess on the forum… ;-).

July 24, 2008 at 2:40 pmYes! and no! It all dpeends on how you have your fields setup in Compressor. You can choose filed dom for both your incoming and outgoing movie. How do you have them setup?

July 24, 2008 at 2:53 pmHi,
my input fields on HDV are upper, and output on SD PAL odd, as they should be for those formats. So i asume i’m doing things right… ;-). Right?
If you want to, you can see the result here:

July 24, 2008 at 3:13 pmHi Przemek,
You should set the Frame Control ON to get a better downsizing. Then let “Output Fields: Same as Source”.

See but isn’t 1080i Upper field and MPEG2 lower field? I would think you need to set your output fields to lower field. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

July 24, 2008 at 3:39 pmWell… i asked the question so i’m not an expert on the conversion subject, but one thing i know interlaced SD PAL DVD MUST have odd fields dominance.

July 24, 2008 at 3:43 pmOkay, the Rafael is correct. In NTSC it’s lower (even). So, in Compressor, just to make sure, set your output fields to Upper.

July 24, 2008 at 3:45 pmNo really Jeremy. MPG2 can be Upper or Lower. As long that the player knows which field have to read first is OK. In PAL-land if you make a DVD from DV footage is Lower, and if you make from 8/10b Unc will be Upper, otherwise you would need Shift-fields etc.

July 24, 2008 at 3:54 pmI just got more confused ;-), but i’ll try your sugestions guys. BIG THX!!!
I always thought that PAL must be ODD (lower) and you cannot change that without causing problems :-).It still seems a bit strange to me, i’m not sure but can you really preserve fields form HDV in SD, aren’t they in different number in those formats?

Odd is Upper (as in 1,3,5,7). Lower is Even (as in 2,4,6,8)

July 24, 2008 at 4:18 pmOh Man, i’m so sorry, thx for correcting me! I really got lost in the basics today… :(. It’s my first time with 1080i, and i’m out of time, doing 3 things at once… I wish everything could be progressive… 😉
Each time i wrote ODD i really ment EVEN.
So i got my HDV ODD upper field and want to get it to SD PAL DVD – i’ll try what Rafael sugested – making upper field MPEG2.THX again, sorry for the mess!
