  • Configuring outputs of a used Horita BSG-50

Posted by Michael Lazar on December 3, 2005 at 11:56 pm

Purchased a used Horita BSG-50 so I will now have “house black” for my decks and the IoLD. I suspect that some of the outputs have been re-configured to generate signals other than what I need (black burst ref). To wit: only one of the outputs marked “BL” causes the Ref light on the Io to illuminate. Unfortunately, the unit came without the manual and the Horita website doesn’t provide electronic versions of the same.

If someone knows the details on how one changes the signals to the various ouputs, I’d appreciate learning how that’s done. I’ve opened the unit once and can see that there are some jumpers on the PCB. However, they are not marked in a way that makes it obvious how one should set them for a given signal.

    Thanks in advance!

the BSG-50 can be reconfigured to output sync, H drive, V drive, and blanking instead of composite color black. It’s been years since I have been inside of a Horita – but Horita can be called at 949-489-0240, and would be happy to tell you the jumper information.

    Bob –

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll give them a call on Monday and see if they can help me out.

OK – I think I’ve sussed out how to set the CSG-50’s outputs on my own. There are some pretty clearly labeled jumpers on the PCB: Blackburst and Sync. But there’s still something I’m not understanding about the signal that the Io is looking for (probably a function of my ignorance of analog signals).

If I hook the Io up to what I am pretty sure is Blackburst, the Ref light does not illuminate. If I hook the Io up to one of the Color Sync outputs, the Ref light goes on.

So what specifically is the Io looking for at the Ref input and why doesn’t the black burst from the BSG-50 cause the Ref light to illuminate?

    Thanks in advance!

first you say BSG-50, then you say CSG-50. Some Horita products use an open collector output circuit, so for it to work you MUST MUST MUST terminate the looping input with a 75 ohm BNC terminator – if you don’t have one, loop the Ref Input of the AJA into a VTR input that has a 75 ohm term switch. If you don’t terminate, you don’t get black.

Modern genlock circuits strip the H + V sync information off the composite video signal (that’s why they call it COMPOSITE – its a combination of the video signal and the sync signal). The difference between SYNC and sync from color black (or a composite video signal) is the level – SYNC is a 4V P-P signal, and composite video is a 1 V peak to peak signal.

Simply terminate the reference loop on the AJA IO, and you will be fine.
