Computer trapped in 2010…
I have an older computer (which can only support USB 2 and Firewire.) And I need to edit down a huge amount of video, much of which is stored on external harddrives that only use USB. Is it possible to work efficiently using proxy files that would all be on one firewire drive while the source files are on USB or do I need to have everything connected via Firewire? Thank you so much!

It’s going to take a long time to read all of the USB 2 into Proxies but then sure. My suggestion would be to move the files onto a FW800 drive asap to avoid constant pain.

Are there no PCIe slots in the system (you don’t say what it is)? If there are, try a HighPoint RocketRAID 2722 and a 4 drive SAS enclosure. You could hit almost 500MB/sec if you can so that.

A quick look on the web showed that an external 2 TB G-tech drive with FW800 is about $200. (There are probably more choices) If you transfer your video onto that, it should give you a big boost in editing speed since FW800 is much faster than USB2.

If you are editing in FCP 7, there would be lots of “frame dropped during playback” from the USB 2 drives.
Does FCP X have that same error available?

Are the drives USB2 or USB 3? You can add a USB 3 Card very cheaply to an old Mac Pro and it makes it much faster.
