Computer shut down during rendering
Hi,
I am trying to render a 5 minute movie using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 but the computer shuts down during rendering.
The source files are from an AVCHD camera at the highest setting. I’ve taken advice and split the 5 minute movie into 3 bits (removing unused media from the projects) rendered separately (into avi files) before combining again. However even the smaller bits will not render.
I have defragged the machine and was able to render 2 of the bits. But not the third. Defragged again but no joy. Seems the render file format or template selected makes no difference. They just won’t complete rendering. The smaller bits got to 47% before the computer shut down. The larger original project file got to 4% and stayed there before the computer shut down.
The computer specs are:
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860@2.8Ghz 1.20Ghz
Installed memory (RAM) 4Gb
Sytem 64-bit OS
Running Win7ProI’m relatively new to this game. Any advice welcomed.

Usually a computer shutdown during render is from overheating. Get a free utility like CoreTemp and monitor your CPU temps while rendering. If it’s overheating, you don’t have enough heat dissipation. For now, open the door of the computer case and point a window fan at it and see if that helps.

Another possibility is that the Power Supply is inadequate.

Laptop
If you are running on a laptop and are using Windows 7, the default cooling policy is ‘passive’. I had this issue with my Acer laptop that kept on shutting down during renders. Once I changed it to ‘Active’ it was fine, but it does mean the laptop consumes more battery power. But, it renders!
If this is the case, “System cooling policy” is a power setting item for Processor under the Power options of Windows 7 -> change plan setting -> advanced power setting -> Processor power management.

As suggested by John, rendering the with the side panel off and a big electric fan usually works

So the “permanent” fix it determine why your CPU is not staying cool. If the computer is old it’s probably full of dust. You should vacuum it out. Especially the fins on the CPU heat sink.
