Computer Monitor as a Reference Monitor?
Posted by Bob Holbrook on March 31, 2009 at 9:16 pmDoes anyone have experience using a hi res computer monitor, fast (2ms) as a Reference Monitor? I’ve read one article in an industry Mag where the editor said his $500, 24 inch DVI input monitor, calibrated with a “Spider”, attached to a second Video card in his Mac Pro, was just as good, if not better than the Big dollar options out there?
Feedback please. The Sony is dieing.
Thanks,
Bob

Have a wonderful day.

How about a high end LCD Monitor, using a HDMI out of a video card?

March 31, 2009 at 11:40 pmWell, the whole LCD question is still up in the air, but it still will cost upwards of $2000 to get a decent one, and then you have to tweak the hell out of it to get it close.
So no, it’s not as easy as going down to Best Buy and buying a Sony Bravia. You really need some kind of ref monitor to get your colors close, then you can use something like a Panasonic plasma for clients to look at, but it takes a lot of tweaking.
Have a wonderful day.

You want to use a computer monitor to color correct? Gotta get the Matrox MXO…that’s the only thing that will make a computer monitor usable in this way:

March 31, 2009 at 11:44 pmForgot to add that the Matrox MXO box will give your computer monitor more capability as a Ref monitor, but not having tried it, I just don’t know.
Have a wonderful day.

March 31, 2009 at 11:54 pmPanasonic TH42PH11UK $899. It will take in DVI or analog HD component, and yes, it has an HDMI input, and you can buy an HD-SDI board for it. In use by countless post facilities.
Now, if you don’t buy some video card (from AJA, Blackmagic, Matrox, MOTU, etc.) and attempt to make a living with a bare bones MAC, I will fly out to your location and beat you senseless.

“And be sure to phone Bob in the middle of the night, right around 3:30am, and assure him that you bought your cables somewhere other than Radio Shack, or else he’ll humiliate you publicly, and you would want that.

Except that the HD-SDI input is somewhere around $1,200 or $1,500 which is why we have not installed that in any of our units. Why it costs more than the screen, I don’t know but it does.
What we are going to do shortly is pick up three of the AJA Hi5’s soon so we can take the HD-SDI to HDMI for about $300 per screen.

He really will. He drove all the way here from Orlando because he didn’t trust me to connect all the BNC connectors on my Patch Panels….. 🙂
I think we need to start a new saying on here. “You’ve Been Zelined!” Maybe we can make up little badges and when we attend conventions, we can all wear the little badges and have a UG meeting of the Zelined. Could be fun!

OMG, Bob, I’ve just realised who you are – you are BOB!
Jut when I thought I’d gotten over Twin Peaks. Seriously, has anyone here seen them in the same room together?
