Compressor Freezes
Posted by Tom Hepburn on September 12, 2006 at 1:17 pmHello,
I’m trying to encode from Final Cut Pro to Compressor 2. I’m using OS 10.4.7. I’m also up to date.
For some reason evertime I set an encode (with a default preset) it runs through the audio fine, but when it gets to the video, the fan winds up to about 10,000 RPM…….then freezes.
Anyone have a similar problem and if so, how did you fix it?
Thanks in advance,

September 12, 2006 at 1:20 pmHow are you exporting to Compressor (it’s a Compressor 2.0.1 running in FCP 5.0.4?). Did you install Shake 4.1 on that same setup?

September 12, 2006 at 1:25 pmI was running into similar problems. The only way I could get it to work, and it seems faster, was to output a full size QuickTime file for the piece(s) then drag them into Compressor. Works perfectly. Just did 6 pieces alll at once with two different file sizes of each. Perfect. Had tried outputting to Compressor directly… as I said CRASH.
I now do all my pieces this way.

September 12, 2006 at 2:02 pmI’m not seeing the crash using file/export/using compressor. I think it’s due to a very clean install… Starting with a fresh install of Tiger.

September 12, 2006 at 2:20 pmThank for the replies all. To further detail:
It crashes even when I bring animations into it. In other words I’m just encoding and not using FCP. So if I export a QT from FCP and bring it in to Compressor I’ll have the same result.
Also, Shake is not installed.
I guess the thing to do would be installing the OS again. I’ve reinstalled FCP, Compressor, etc., a couple of times with the same result.
Thanks,

September 12, 2006 at 2:40 pmWhat’s the source of the animations? Maya? or? What is the format of the video you are exporting?

September 12, 2006 at 3:16 pmHey Jerry,
For anmations the source is usually an AfterEffects composite of some sort. It is usually compressed with the Animation codec and then brought into Compressor. I set it up to encode at the preset, high quality 60 minute, to MPEG 2. I do the same with FCP movies except. I export using compressor (while in FCP) with the same preset. Crashes in both instances. The crashes btw freezes the cursor and requires me to pull the plug.
Any help would be appreciated.

September 12, 2006 at 8:15 pmI’ve been having this same problem ever since I switched over to FCP5 like a year ago. So far nobody has been able to solve my problem. Like yourself, I have installed and uninstalled FCP and the works several times to no avail. I wish I had a solution for you, but I feel your pain…solidarity. I spend so much wasted time exporting full rez movies and then compressing them using Cleaner (which all of a sudden has stopped working correctly itself).
Good Luck (for both of our sakes),

September 13, 2006 at 12:19 amPossibly the animation codec is the problem… dunno, but I’ve seen a lot of strange things happen with it… like it not working in FCP when you export an animation sequence from FCP to a self contained movie… the alpha gets lost. (but not always – wierd).
Might try a different codec for the export?

October 19, 2006 at 6:50 pmOK! After a lot of searching, reinstalling, etc., I seem to have solved the problem. I know many people haven’t had a problem with Compressor, but if you have it really is frustrating. Anyway:
