  • Compressor Cluster Not Threading on new 12-core?

Posted by Sean Kapleton on February 25, 2011 at 4:58 am

Having a weird issue on my new 12-core. I have used cluster plenty on previous gen 8-core models for large 5D transcodes etc and when i set a cluster batch out of compressor i am used to seeing the file breaking into multiple threads of itself and then back into one when complete. I am not seeing anything in the custom destination folder i created. checking thru all the settings i dont see anything wrong.

I have a new 12-core w/ SSD for OS and 8tb RAID 0 internal where the media reads and rights to.

I have attached a screen grab showing both the activity monitor showing what i believe is the 20 instance settings i chose in system prefs – this is moving a little bit here and there – you will also notice that its stuck in batch monitor with the “unknown remaining” and no progress bar action.

anyone have suggestions on how to get things working. i have gone into system prefs for qmaster and compressor resetting things multiple times etc. would it make sense to use one of those third part apps like compressor fix?
help would be very appreciated tonight.
    cheers

    Hi Sean,
I never worked with so many cores, but: Why to set “20 instances” when you have only 12 cores?
I understand that you need to set the same number of instances as CPU cores.

    thank you for the reply.

i tried setting it to 12 instances even tho it gives me the option of 24?

did a quick test and it worked, so then i switched it back to 20 and now that works?!

I used compressor repair and didn’t notice any change so what did i not understand here?
    anyways thank you

Probably with your changes you refreshed some Preferences or so.
    Great that worked.

More than 12 instances should work.
You have 12 physical cores but 24 available threads.

It’s the same in After Effects CS5. You have 24 available threads for rendering on a 12-Core.
You do need 32GB -64 GB ram ofcourse or it will only slow it down.
