Compressor alternatives
Posted by Chris Stevens on September 13, 2010 at 2:22 pmNot very happy with the results from Compressor when creating an SD DVD from a 720 50p programme. Is there better software (mac) to do the job? Or should I consider a hardware solution?

September 13, 2010 at 2:31 pmI’ve had great luck with Compressors SD DVD settings. You might want to look at Sorenson Squeeze or Cleaner if you are not happy.

September 13, 2010 at 3:36 pm9 is to high for a max bit rate. 9 will not play on all DVD players. Have you tried using the pre-built settings?

September 13, 2010 at 3:43 pmHave tried Apple standard settings & that looks fine on a regular TV/Panel. I’m playing out to a Pana 60″ Plasma via a quality player & it looks cleaner (less noise & more sharp) using a max bit rate of 9.
Think I can see an error in my settings – Rate Conversion is set to Fast. Should be Best me thinks?Cams: Z1, EX3, HDX900.

September 13, 2010 at 4:05 pmHi Chris,
Your setting looks OK (no need to set de-interlacer: Best), but I agree with Stephen about the data rate too high.
Compressor is not the best application when you have to put three hours movie in a disc, but for short programs when you can let high data rate works OK.
If you are ready to work with that data rate (reduce it a bit), make some tests with Open and Short GOPs.

September 13, 2010 at 4:27 pmWhich high bitrate averages, always use CBR method, it is faster and better.
Use a 7.5 Mbps
If your footage is Progressive all the Deinterlaced settings are bypassed. (wish they would gray out).
With Compression you should be trying 20 min settings of your movie to see different results from your settings. When using CBR you can use shorter test segments. Try with frame controls off and one with down converting is a separate step before encoding to m2v.
Then if you are not getting good enough results try the other software listed. But at these high bitrates Compressor does a great job.

ANY standard DVD is not going to look all that great on a TV that big.
If you want something that will look good on a screen that big, go with BlueRay or play it digitally using something like a Apple TV or even connecting a computer directly to the screen.
