  • Compression of the picture in the Project Monitor window

Posted by Philippe Verdoni on January 17, 2010 at 11:22 am

I had a dual monitor computer with two 17 inches screens and I have replaced one of them which had failed by a 24 inches. It’s maybe a consequences, 3 days later although my current Premiere CS4 project had remained unchanged until then, when I have reopened it the picture in the project monitor is compressed in the lower half of the window. The picture gets back to its normal size if I double click the Project monitor window but I need to re-render the related clip. When the re-rendering process is finished the picture in the Project monitor window is once again compressed in the lower half of the window.
This problem is probably related to the display settings since, when I export the damaged timeline, the media that is generated has a perfect size.
I have tried to fix the problem by a complete re-rendering of the timeline after I had deleted all the files in the video previews folder; then I have reopened the project and everything was looking perfect but the timeline needed to be rendered once again. At the end of the rendering operation the picture in the Project monitor is still compressed!!
I have no idea on how to correct this issue and would very much appreciate your help.

Are you using the second monitor as full screen preview?

The first thing to try is an update to the latest drivers for the graphics card. Also look at the optimal resolution for the new monitor and make sure it’s set correctly on the extended display properties.

You also should remove the current monitor driver and let windows find the correct one or install the one that came with the new monitor.

I have the 24 “ as the main monitor and the 17 “ as the extension. The problem occurs on both monitors. I had installed the latest Nvidia driver (I have an Nvidia 7600GS video board) for Windows 7 but the problem went worst since sometimes the 17” screen was becoming entirely black.
Upon your advice I had uninstalled the Nvidia driver and left Windows load its own driver. The situation has been improved in the extent that the black screen problem had disappeared but my basic problem of picture compression remained unchanged.
I have finally made an Export/Media of the entire timeline into a single movie and created a new project in which I have imported this movie. In this new project everything is going normally and I can add new clips in the continuation of this movie. Anyway making modifications of the first part of this project will be uneasy since all the initial video and audio tracks are mixed into single tracks.
I still cannot understand the origin of my problem which is possibly caused by a bad overlay management resulting of an uncontrolled modification in the settings of my first project. .
    Thank you for your assistance.

I have finally found the origin of my problem.
For an unknown reason the settings of the sequence (right-click the sequence name in the Project window and select Sequence settings) had been changed. The option “Preview file format” was set to “Microsoft AVI” instead of “MPEG 1 picture “. Ouf!!
