    Hello!

I’m an independent filmmaker and am editing my first feature film. I’ve been editing in Premiere CS4 raw, uncompressed footage this whole time and am now wondering how I’m going to get this film to fit on a DVD. One five minute scene is something like 30 gigs… so obviously the entire 108 minute film is not going to fit uncompressed.

I’ve been toying with some of the compressions / codecs in Premiere but it’s really just been hit and miss, blindly fumbling around with codecs I don’t understand.

So, assuming this film is going straight to DVD and will never be shown in a theater… do any of you guys have a favorite codec / compression that you like to use? Is there an industry standard I should be using?

I wouldn’t mind spending money on a third party codec if it offers the best solution.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Going to DVD, you don’t really have any choices, it’s the Mpeg2 DVD export codec. The bit rate depends on the length of the movie. Under an hour, you can use 7.5 CBR, over that, use a bit rate calculator.

Some newer DVD players do support other formats like H.264 or wmv, but that wouldn’t be an option for mass distribution.
