Compressing a Feature Length Movie?
Okay… so not exactly feature length, but at 75 min it’s a bit of a beast even when compressed.
Right now I’ve got it in PPro 1.0 as a DV AVI file and the size is something like 14.5 GB. Even when I use TMPGenc 4.0 Xpress to compress it with the H. 264 codec it’s still over 4 GB in size.
I was hoping to post this on Vimeo but even with a membership upgrade the upload limit is 2 GB a week. And I’m pretty sure if you read the fine print it’s technically only 1 GB per file.
How can I get this down to a more manageable size without destroying the quality?
Am I going to have to bite the bullet and break it up into several parts?

There is no mystery to the file size of compressed video. You can compress to any size you want by doing a little math. H264 is a good codec.
75 minutes = 4500 seconds
1 GB divided by 4500 = 222 kilobytes per second
222 kBps times 8 bits to the byte= 1760 kilobits per second combined video/audio bitrate.
Resolution should be 50% (480×360)
Choose 2 pass vbr video bitrate =1500 kbps
Audio bitrate (AAC)= 192 kbps. -
That is unbelievably helpful. Thank you. The only part that has me tripped up is how exactly to apply those setting in Premiere. I’m using 1.0 and when I go into the media encoder and select Quicktime I’m presented with a huge list of options and I’m not sure how to apply the settings you’ve specified above.
Under the Video tab I’ve got width, height, frame rate, key frame distance, and datarate.
Under General there are check boxes for Loop, Compress Movie Header, Autoplay, Hinted Movie, Make Movie Self Contained, Optimize Hints, and Video Hinter Track. Not sure which ones to select.
There’s also a drop down menu for RTP Payload Encoding and the pre-set is “Use Native Encoding if possible”. Then there’s Packet Size Limit, Packet Duration Limit, and Interval.
I have no idea what to do with any of this. Is there another way I should be exporting this?
