Compostion and Export settings for HD 720p
I shot a 3 min video in 720 24pn with the HVX200. I am exporting the video from After effects to play on a dvd. I am then buring the DVD in Adobe Encore to play on an SD TV set.
Here are my questions:
1. What are the settings I should have used to setup my composition in After effects to edit the 720p 24pn footage? Should it be 1280×720 square pixels, 16×9, 23.97 frame rate?
2. What should the export settings be in AE? Do I export it at 1280×720 or do I downconvert to 720×480 at this point?
3. Does 720p footage play on a SD tv set normally or does it need to be downconverted to 720×480.Thanks for helping to clarify these issues.

1. 1280×720, square pixels, 23.976 if you have already removed the extra frames when you captured the footage.
2. Render using make movie (or add composition to render queue, not export. In AE there is a difference. Drag the footage into a 720×480, D1/DV pixel ratio, 23.976 comp and render that comp to a high-quality codec.
3. No. Unless you specifically intend to make a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD ($$$$) you must render to 720×480. Even for an HD set. The issue is not the set — it is the DVD player.When you author the DVD, you must make sure the authoring app knows the material is 16:9. You have to set a flag for how SD sets handle it: letterbox or pan/scan: your choice.
… and you must test on TV sets and computers.Now here’s an issue that I’m foggy on right now: I’m not sure if older or cheaper DVD players can play 23.976 fps DVDs. That’s a question for the DVD Authoring COW. If you decide that you have to create a 29.97 fps DVD, in AE you should set up the Render settings to add pulldown, giving you a 29.97 video automatically (pulldown phase doesn’t matter). However, it’s my understanding that all current DVD players can handle 23.976 – they call it progressive mode, understandably.

Also, how do I make Encore recognize that it is 16×9 and set a flag for SD TV sets to create a letter box?

When I create the comp for the rendered 720p footage to go into, what are the exact comp settings? Is it 720×480, D1/DV NTSC Widescreen (1.2) or D1/DV NTSC (0.9)? Do I have to manually scale down the footage to fit inside this new comp?

Uncompressed AVI or Quicktime Animation if Encore will accept it. Same (virtually) quality, but QT Anim gives a smaller file size.

Sorry, I don’t know. You’ll have to check the Encore manual.

Use the DV widescreen preset. The first one of the two you mentioned.
Yes, but scale it down using ctrl-shift-alt-H ( if I recall) to make it fit to width and retain proportion. The keystrokes should be under “keyboard shortcuts” in the help.
