I’m designing a set of DVD covers where the feature photos on the fronts covers have black backgrounds. I have adjusted the levels of the photos so that the blacks look the same as the full black background. However when I combine the layers and increase the brightness (only to check how close the match is) you can still see a difference between the two. I have tried fading the edges of the photo into the background but I am still concerned when this goes to print that the two different tones of black will show up.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

What program are you doing this in? Photoshop? If so, just take a sample of both blacks. if they are the same CYMK values, you’ll be ok. You can’t do it by sight.
