What makes MC composite differently when there is an empty track in the composite?
Image 1 shows a comp on V3 with a luma key and animatte mask

Image 2 is the same track moved down to V2

    Any insights appreciated?

Been a while since doing this in MC, but i would assume you are filling your key with the track above…which in v2, is black.

Is your luma key nested under your ani matte?
If so I think the lumakey expects to get its input from v1 in the nest , (not the track v1), if you have nothing in the nest on v1 it looks down to layers below. But this logic does not follow unless you have an empty track underneath.
    Did I mention logic?
