  • Compositing HD greenscreen over B&W archival film footage.

The archival film footage is at SD rez which I pulled down to 23.98. The HD footage was shot with a f900 at 23.98.

I’ve keyed the greenscreen out, shrunk it down to fit the SD footage, comped it in with grain and color correction… and it looks OKAY, but not PERFECT.

I feel like I can see the difference between the old film look of the archival footage, and the HD f900 footage… can’t put my finger on it though. It feels like a subtle difference in the motion. Is this just a film vs. video problem?

Anyone have any tips or suggestions?

Also, I’m just fast-blurring the HD footage to match SD footage. Also used a slight channel blur. Anyone have a better way to “de-rez” an image?

    Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

There’s a lot that come into play with this sort of work and without seeing the results you are getting it’s difficult to offer accurate advice. One trick you could try is to Remove Noise from the archive footage, comp on the greenscreen, then re-apply noise across the entire scene. This will help the noise blend in without shifting patterns right on the edge of the greenscreen component.

Light-wrapping is important as well as matching lighting for the scene. As far as movement goes, check the blur on the characters of the f900 and the old footage in a still. If it doesn’t match you might have to check out some products from Re:Vision to blur the motion more/less.

Other than that, it’s just fiddling like you have been doing – also, get someone else to look at it. I find doing this work I’m never happy with the comp because I KNOW it’s a comp. 😉
