    Roland rocks.
See the Cow’s collection of AE tutorials, look for Sky Replacement.

You usually end up using several keyers, matte adjustments, and maybe some alpha transfer filters to create the holdback/matte. It’s not complicated but can get tricky if the elements you want to eliminate include lots of subtle tonal values. Yo need to stack keyers for each set of values.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

[Ong Joseph] “Is this achieved through rotoscoping? Can someone provide some pointers? Some shots seem impossible to get a clean matte with motion blur and organic objects ie. clouds and smoke.”

You should sign up for the course, I hear it’s very good. Plus you get to fund my beer allowance for next month. I LIKE! 😉

There are lots of techniques involved. And depending on the subject matter, some techniques are better than others. Dave’s alluded to a few of them in his post.

    Cheers

    Hi Roland,

thanks. I would love to pick up a few courses or two to enrich myself. See that there’s a course coming up in December. Meanwhile, I’ll experiment with what was suggested, trying to extract out some mattes from my footage.
