Could anyone please advise on combining PAL and NTSC footage in an NTSC project (FCP 5)?
I edited a PAL clip into an NTSC sequence and it seemed to work. Will I have problems later on (will repeated frames be noticeable? any other problems?). Is the compensation produced by FC reliable or is it better to make the transfer from PAL into NTSC by a specialized facility? Is it a good idea to edit each PAL tape into an NTSC sequence, calculate it, export and importe it to avoid calculation during editing?
    Thanks for any advice.

I think I’d transfer the PAL clips to NTSC with the standards conversion in Compressor 2, or use the filter here: https://www.nattress.com (faster I hear). Then edit with the converted footage.

Nattress Standards converter is an awesome quality and fast tool for this.

    I highly reccomend.

    Simone,
PAL to NTSC by any serious plugin, or hardware converter will give you a better result, as the product has less data per frame.
Going the other way, data is predicted and added, so the quality will take a bigger hit.
What is your final output format? Hopefully it is NTSC, in which case convert your PAL material to NTSC first (yes, the Natress converter is good) and then import that into your NTSC FCP T-L and complete your project.
Hope this clarifys this for you.
    Cheers

Many thanks for the advice. Will the Nattress converted material (from PAL to NTSC) work with an HD timeline setting? I’m only talking about the frame rate issue for the moment, not the frame size.
    Thanks again.

[simone] “ill the Nattress converted material (from PAL to NTSC) work with an HD timeline setting? I’m only talking about the frame rate issue for the moment, not the frame size.

Frame rate and frame size are matched in presets. I think it will work with the HD preset, but ask Graeme gnattress@mac.com
