combine an rgb clip with its alpha channel into one comp and export
hello everyone, so here’s what i was wandering about.
i have two clips, 1-my graphic or fill and 2- its alpha channel.
i’ve lined them up perfectly in after effects in 2 separate layers.
how do i merge them so that the 1st layer, the gfx, references its alpha and allows for all the layer underneath those two to show through.
i’ve tried all blending modes for the top layer but none seem to work!

you can position the matte layer above the fill layer in the timeline and set the fill layer to use the matte layer as a track matte (luma matte) using the modes panel-trkmat drop down (if you don’t see the modes panel in the timeline click the triangle in the upper right corner of the timeline and choose columns>modes).
since the layers are most likey the exact same size and line up exactly, you could also apply the set matte effect to the fill layer, choosing the matte layer to ‘take matte from’ and set ‘use for matte’ to luminance.

one other thing, if your fill is ‘shaped’ (rendered on black, or another color) and is creating fringe or halo effect around the edges. you can remove that with the remove color matting effect.
if you used the set matte method, you can just add the effect after the set matte effect then set it to the bg color on the fill.
if you did it the track matte method you will need to pre-compose the matte and fill layer’s together (jsut select them in the timeline and choose layer>pre-compose (move all attributes, you don’t need to open it). then apply the remove color matting to the precomp in the main comp.
