Colour striping in sky – very low contrast situation
Hey everyone, I was in need of an establishing shot for one of my locations at dusk, so I decided to take one of my daytime shots, slap on the Levels effect, and see what I could do.
It worked great, except for one issue :
As you can see, there are some pretty significant noisy stripes in the sky where the contrast in the clouds is very, very low. This is exacerbated on some uncalibrated TV sets that boost up saturation of these various colours.
What would be your remedies for this situation, within the Adobe Suite?

In after effects, bring the clip in, set your workspace to 16bpc and use the degrain effect. Forcing, in this case, After Effects, to resample those colors at a higher bit depth should smooth out the banding, at least in theory.

The equivalent functionality in Premiere Pro is “Render at Maximum Depth” in the sequence and export settings. You should see a difference in the RGB Parade and YC Waveform scopes. However, according to Adobe all effects within the pipeline must be 32-bit; otherwise the sequence will be rendered at 8-bit (and be susceptible to banding).
