  • Colour Shift Between TIFF and Animation only in FCP

I’m working between AE and FCP and I know there are all sorts of things I should be doing to avoid colour differences between the two applications and I think I’ve got it sorted for the main part but I noticed a weird situation that I don’t understand.

Most of the stuff from AE has been rendered as animation codec QuickTimes but the renders were slow and crashed a few times so I decided to start rendering to 8-bit TIFF sequences instead. My plan was to create QuickTime reference movies from the TIFFs and use them in FCP.

I had two issues with this process. Firstly, once I’d imported the ref movs I couldn’t load them into the viewer. I could drag them to the timeline and render them into Pro-Rez (which I’m using for the rest of the project) but couldn’t load them into the viewer.

Once I’d rendered them into Pro-Rez, the colours were much brighter than the Animation QuickTimes that had been rendered into Pro-Rez. The original TIFF files looked exactly the same as the Animation QuickTimes and there wasn’t any noticeable colour shift when the QuickTimes were converted to Pro Rez.

If I imported the TIFF sequences into AE and rendered them into Animation QuickTimes they looked fine so it’s FCP doing something weird with the TIFF files. I thought they be pretty much the same as the Animation codec. Does anyone know what is going on? And is there a solution other than another trip through AE before I bring them into FCP?

    Thanks.
