Colour Grading to match example
Hi folks,
I hope someone can give me some pointers on a bit of grading I need to do. I understand a certain amount about the process, but due to a strange sort of colour blindness, I can sometimes not see what I need to do . It’s very odd and tough to explain. I usually try and stay away from creative grading and let those better equipped do it, but I kinda have to do this myself.
ANYWAY! – what I want to do is get my footage

to look and feel like this example I like.
Let’s ignore the nasty tilt-shift, I won’t be doing that, but it’s the colour palette and texture that I like.
I can tell that the shadows need to be pulled towards blue and the whites are more yellow, but there’s a lot I’m missing after that. How do I get that sort of.. ‘milky’ midtone section whilst keeping the skin tones real. Every test I’ve done so far has ended up very ‘golden’ (which is nice, but not what I want, or i’ve lost too much highlight detail (many of the shots in my video have large areas of white).
My tests also result in losing the colour of the sky, which in the example, keeps a nice popping blue. What else am I missing between the two images.
I’m working in AE5, particularly hate using Colour Finesse, would rather learn more of the process through standard tools, but also have Magic Bullet Looks if it’s easier to achieve there.
If indeed, it’s just as easy to create the look in final cut pro 7, that’d be great. Either way 🙂
Can you help?
sincerely,
moog
