  • Colour correction snow footage [help]

Posted by Frank Brown on January 30, 2012 at 7:45 am

    Hello everyone.
I`ve got a problem with colout correction – I can`t get rid of the blue colour on bluish snowy footages.
I shoot outside so the sky is also present on the videos.
I`ve tried to play with Levels, Curves, Magic Bullet Looks but in the final result it looks like overexposed footage.

Any minds how to make snow from blue to white?
Maybe there are some cool and smart plugins for these purposes?

Post a clip or still of your footage… it’s hard to give advice on visual issues without actually seeing the problem.

How about first masking out the sky, and then simply de-saturating the remaining blues?

Chris, there are a lot of video (about 4 hours). Sorry, but each masking isn`t solution for me.

Ted, I`ve attached file with the sample. Please check it.
    Thanks in advance.

From the shot you posted it seems that Auto Color (under Color Correction)should do the trick. Not having a shot with sky in it is hard to estimate how that would look but I think you should be ok.

One more thing- make sure you mention this to whomever shot this footage: manual white balance! This would’ve eliminated all the work you need to do in post to color correct the footage.

Ted, basicly we shoot in “Snow” mode and
white balance is always different because we shoot in different places and different time.

Auto Color is awesome! Thank you very much!

Snow mode is not the best choice if you want your footage to look professional. White balancing for every location/light setup is the right way to go about this. It takes 20 seconds and it eliminates hours of post work.
