1. When you add an fx effect to your event, you can keyframe this effect in time so that e.g. the transition from normal colors to sepia can be set exactly how you like it. You find the timeline to set keyframes at the bottom of the video fx popup window.

2. To get an overlay with equal intensity, simply place both events on two tracks above each other and make the opacity of the upper track 50%. You can use the opacity envelop on the timeline or the levels-slider in the trackheader.
Or you can play with the composition modes from the upper track to get nice blendings.
And to get very special customized blendings, you can use the pixelan plugin Spicemaster.

1)What is this particular fx effect? Can’t find among Video FX.

2)Is it possible to make invisible/transparent the part of the upper video clip that I don’t want to interfere with the lower one?

For example, I want a person from the upper track be on the left side of the final picture while a person from the lower track would be seen on the right side. But I don’t want a horse, which the person from above holds to his right, appear and cover the person from the lower track who also stands on the right side.

The Sepia effects can be found within Vegas under the FX: Film Effects. Black and white can e.g. be achieved via the Film effects, via the BLACK and WHITE FX or by adding the COLOR CORRECTOR fx and setting the saturation to zero. The results are not identical with these effects, so just see what you like most.

Having specific parts of an event combined with specific parts of another event is no problem. To achieve this, you make use of a mask. A mask can be made inside the event pan/crop window or you can make a black/white/grey mask in any graphic editor and apply it in Vegas. This last possibility is not very useful when you want to change the mask in time. But a mask made in the pan/crop event can be keyframed in time. However, Pixelans Spicemaster can do miracles in making time-dependend masks.

To add the black and white/grey mask to your video:
Create three video tracks.
Place the black and white clip on top.
Place the two video clips on the two layers below.
Add the fx MASK GENERATOR to the black and white event and choose the option LUMINANCE
Choose the composition mode MULTIPLY (MASK) for the upper track.
Make the middle track a child of the upper track.

To create masks, you can even make use of Sony Cookie Cutter effect or the black and white generated media (like you will find under the color gradient). However, whether they are usefull will completely depend on which shape your mask needs to be.

Hey Theo,

I finally started to do this mask thing and of coz something goes wrong. I’ve read on compositing modes, masks both Vegas help and your notes, it still doesn’t work.

I have:

– The uppest track is Parent, in Multiply mode. Should contain black/white clip.

What clip? Should I create a black image in Photoshop? Sounds weird.
In Vegas Help there’s a picture. With a transparent oval/whatever form. How they got it?

I think because I can’t solve this, the rest doesn’t work either.

The aim is to take away the person to the right in a above clip, and substitute it with a personto the right from a clip on the track below. As it is now – both clips are just mix together in a mess.

That is possible. But you can also make it in Vegas using Generated media (e.g. black and white gradient).

No. Both middle and bottom clips should be in alpha mode, but only the middle track should be set to CHILD, not the lowest event.
