  • Coloring an image by an effect like an ink or cloud burst

I was wondering if it was possible to take a desaturated image, but then have some sort of mask that is a video clip of ink pouring or a cloud burst, that as it moves across the page, it reveals the true colors of the image.

Basically a cloud burst that reveals true image colors.

This is how I would do it normally.
1.Layer the black and white image on the bottom
2.Color image on the top of that one
3.Animate a mask over the color image so that it covers up the black and white one.

So how do I go about this with a clip of a cloud burst (that has been keyed to only show the clouds)
Ive messed with the track matte (but the image wont become fully colorized, there is still a slight tint from the clouds)

    Hmm …
layer 1: ink or clouds as alpha matte (hidden, of course)
    layer 2: saturated image
    layer 3: desaturated image

Where layer 1 is completely opaque, layer 2 will be revealed. Where it is completely transparent, layer 2 will be invisible. Where it is in-between, layer 2 will show as partially transparent, showing some of the desaturated layer below.

So the cloud/ink in layer 1 needs to be opaque with a soft edge. I’d make a comp that contains copies of that footage, overlaid to the point of solidity, maybe with an adjustment layer on top, blurring the whole stack. Then I’d take that comp and use it as the matte.

    Does that make sense?

    sort of understand…!

so your saying there is no way to do it, unless i overlay multiple layers>

Thats the only way to reveal anything. Without layers you won’t have anything to reveal, and AE needs the alpha matte to be in the comp so you will always need at least 3 layers. It’s all AE basic techniques.

Well, you need to opacitize (!) the cloud, or make it opaque almost to the edges. You could mess with the alpha levels, but that might muck up the edges.

The extra layers should not be an issue if you do them in a nested comp and use that as the track matte — you don’t need to track matte each layer.
