  • Color timing on FCP5 HD

Posted by Jonddominguez on September 8, 2005 at 11:49 pm

I’m editing a shortfilm with Final Cut Pro 5 on my PowerBook G4
(17 inch TFT) and now I’m going to do the color timing, also with FCP5.

I don’t know why my HD footage looks different (in color and
contrast) on Quicktime (full screen) than on the FCP Digital
    Cinema Desktop Preview.

Gamma and saturation are completely different between video
played on Quicktime and on FCP.

Which one is more reliable, Quicktime or FCP5 playback?

[jonddominguez] “Which one is more reliable, Quicktime or FCP5 playback?”

Neither. You need to view the footage on an external broadcast monitor to do true coloring of any footage. I use the Sony PVM20L5/1 multiformat monitor viewed via a Kona 2 for all my SD and HD coloring.

Wally’s completely right. You *cannot* do correct color timing with your PowerBook. I too use a Kona 2 in my main edit suite. Output goes to both a Sony PVM20L5/1 for accuracy and a Panny plasma display for, well, not accuracy. If you want serious color timing capabilities, then look into Silicon Color. We use their FinalTouch HD system which is by far the best color timing/grading tool you can use, save a da Vinci or Pogol system costing exponentially more.
