Color Space
I have a mac, cs5, and a Canon 7d dslr camera and i need help with understanding color bit depth so i don’t lose work. I have looked at tutorials but have not found exactly what i am looking for.
I want the best color available (obviously). I am using AE / Color Finesse to color grade. I create a comp using 32 bit color in AE.
But here is where i am confused.
1. I don’t see a place to change premiere to 32 bit? How does this work?
2. If my camera is 8 bit what does it matter if I work in 32 bit
3. will working in 32 bit in ae screw up colors from premiere when I send it over from dynamic link?
4. I get a warning using effects that only use 8/16 bit …will this mess up the color?
5. What format should i use to export so i don’t lose all the work i did,I know there is info out there somewhere, please help.

1) https://blogs.adobe.com/VideoRoad/2010/06/understanding_color_processing.html you need to turn on Maximum Quality for your project. The article will answer a number of your other questions.
2) Better color mixing, better blending of images in the midtones (thanks to a transformation to linear gamma and back to viewing gamma after calculation) and other minute advantages.
3) If Premiere isn’t set for maximum quality, I’m not sure what will happen. It may truncate it to 8 or 10 bit or it may recognize it as native and fall back to full 32-bit for that section. Not well documented.
4) IIRC it will reduce the precision of all effects that follow it in the effects stack. Even in 32 bit mode, your image quality will be reduced back to 8 or 16 bit precision.
5) An intermediate codec like any of the DNxHD 10 bit codecs, ProRes 4444, and so on. Most playable formats max at 10 bits of color precision. 32 bits doesn’t enhance the image so much as aid in the precision of color calculations. Common monitors are limited to 8-bit with specialty panels allowing for 10-bit viewing precision.

Perfect information Angelo, thanks so much. Explained a lot of information that i didn’t understand.
While your on a roll, do you know of a tutorial on exporting formats…i still get confused on what to export to, the adobe breakdown talks more about technical.. I’m really just looking for a spreadsheet type that says:
format….good for this…..bad for this…..here are the pros….here are the cons….etcthanks again for your help, very much appreciated,

Export format should be based on the technical needs of your delivery destination. Broadcast has their own set of narrow specs to work within, DVD does, Blu Ray does, and even YouTube and Vimeo have FAQs with recommended formats and settings.

I’m looking to understand all the formats. I was surprised that i couldn’t find a comprehensive tutorial on the formats.
I’m working in 32 bit color space using After Effects/ Premiere 1920 X 1080 footage.
I want to upload it to the web, my own site (I have to set up), plus make dvds. With the huge amount of time it takes to render out, i just want to be familiar with all the formats and what they do.Thanks Again for your info!

You’ll want to look into h.264 in an MOV or MP4 container for web in almost all situations, and MPEG2 for DVD. Generally, you’ll set the compression settings for DVD but your DVD authoring program will create and author the file structure to disk.
