  • Color Correction not sticking after render?

Posted by Andrew Rice on October 2, 2009 at 11:47 pm

I am editing with FCP Studio 2 and am working with DVCProHD at 720p60.

So the problem is this. I go into color correction mode and adjust accordingly until my histogram say the whites are below 100%. All is good…..then I render, and to the eye it looks like my corrections have stuck, but if I look at the histogram I am above the 100% again.

What gives? This is not good, I need my settings to stick…is that to much to ask?…or am I missing some setting somewhere?

    Thanks for any help.

What are you using to grade? If you are using the broadcast safe to legalise the peak whites, it will not deliver after render. This is a known bug that has been discussed here for many years.

First off you want apply broadcast safe and levels filters to ensure absolute bradcast safe. I have a recipe for this in my blog.

Second fcp’s scope do not accurately show results after you render color grade filters. I just ignore the scopes after I render. Yep I ignore them and know that how the levels appeared before the render is more accurate. Strange but true and I’ve never had a show fail QC.

Color is even better with broadcast safe though.

Walter Thanks! Very weird that FCP doesn’t show the accurate Color Correction after render…but at least I know my corrections are valid, I thought is still “looked” corrected, but wasn’t sure.

I was not using the broadcast safe and levels filters, just adjusting with the 3 Way CC to achieve the correct balance. I looked for you blog and only found this entry “Apple Color and FCP deliver true Broadcast Safe for ‘the big boys'”…is this the one you were referring too?

In any case I will apply like this 3 Way CC, Broadcast Safe(default setting) and then Levels (what is this filter…I can’t seem to find it and have never used it).

I have never tried using Color and will probably make do with FCP’s options for this round of spots. I do own, and have watched, your DVD “Stop Staring and Start Grading with Apple Color”…just need to make the time to take a project in there!
