  • Color correction info sticking w/ freeze frame

    Hey there fellow grazers,

I’ve got an odd problem regarding freeze frames and color correction filters. I find that when I make a freeze frame from a clip with a color correction filter on it – the filter does not follow the clip. If I want the freeze frame to match the clip I have to reapply the filter. Right, everyone knows that’s the way it’s supposed to work.

What I can’t figure out is that when I’m working on a sequence sometimes a freeze frame will copy the color correction information , and sometimes it will not. The filter never copies over, but the color information sometimes does. If I apply the color corrector to one of these freeze frames that’s already retained the color information, then the filter effect doubles and the ff doesn’t match the source clip, obviously.

Yes, this is a pain, but I’m not even assured within myself that these ffs without filters are going to retain their color information. I’m afraid that somewhere down the line they’re going to revert back to their source clip color. Grrrr.

Has anyone seen anything like this? I’ve had this problem about a year ago and at that point we thought that trashing the prefs (using FCP Rescue 5 – the version corresponding with my version of FCP) fixed the problem – unfortunately no such luck here. I trashed prefs and repaired permissions and relaunched FCP and everything is still the same. If anyone has any ideas to throw out I’d be very grateful.

Perhaps if it’s rendered it contains the info and if it’s not, then it doesn’t. Maybe FCP is linking to a frame on disk, and if it’s rendered it links to the rendered frame. I’ve never quite figured it all out either.

Now that is a thought – I think you’re on to something there. Hmmm, I’m going to force a re-render and see what happens…

No, rendering and re-rendering didn’t change a thing in the behavior – it seems to be source clip related. A freeze frame off of one clip will retain color-corrected information, a freeze frame off of another clip will not. Very strange…
