color correcting HDV on SD monitor
Posted by Philippe Orlando on March 25, 2009 at 10:59 pmIf I correct HDV footage encoded into the Cineform HDV neo and watch it on a standard def monitor, do I get a correct color? Or am I totally off? Can I color correct HDV footage using a Sony PVM-14M4U monitor, which is very decent but only Standard Def
Thanks

March 26, 2009 at 1:50 amThe problem is that most HD TV’s are LCD or some derivation. You should really color correct HD on an LCD because that’s what it will most likely be displayed on. This is why Vegas added the preview on Windows Secondary Display option.
I would try using the Sony PVM-14M4U and then checking it on your HD TV so see how close you got. This will give you a definitive answer for your setup.

Thank you for your answer. But here you are assuming that most people will view my piece in High Def from a blue ray disc then?If I want to burn standard definition DVDs that will be viewed either on traditional CRT TVs or LCD high def TV but in Standard form, should I check everything on the Sony monitor PVM 14m4U or still on a LCD then?
If I really want to color correct for High Def viewing, then why not use my Dell 24″ ? Well, it’s not really a pro monitor and kind of tough to calibrate though.
Should I get a LCD TV such as this one: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/544287-REG/Samsung_LN32A550P3FXZA_LN32A550_32_1080p_LCD.html
or should I get a High Def computer monitor that can be better calibrated for color correction than a TV?

If you are delivering SD then definitely use the Sony PVM14M4U. An LCD will not be accurate for SD.

No reason not to for HD.

Personally I would go with a computer monitor over an LCD TV only because different manufacturers will use different technology to make their TV look more ‘cinema like’. The last thing you want is to use an HD TV that is applying some sort of color curve that you don’t know about. I’ve read that some people who can’t afford a broadcast LCD monitor use an HDTV but I believe a calibrated computer monitor is probably more accurate. I use a Spyder3 Elite Pro to calibrate mine.

Came across this old post…
In fact Mike and i recently had a similar discussion on an another forum.
If you have any firewire device that can output video, you can use that to output to your Sony pvm monitor. With HDV/Cineform HDV you don’t have to worry about color issues as Vegas will make sure the output is correct. So you’ll have HD on the timeline but monitor in SD.
I used to use an old Sony Digital8 camera that I bought used, the transport was broken but the firewire pass through still worked! You get the idea – any device that can output video will work. And you already have a very adequate monitor in the Sony.
