    Hi folks,

So I’ve just drawn a chart on the office whiteboard to figure out if any on our machines can run Color and sadly it looks like none of them can!

Our 2 G5’s (I’m going to ignore the G4’s since they’ll never run Color!) have a Radeon 9600XT, and a Radeon X850XT – both on AGP, as our machines are pre-PCI Express.

I’ve had a look around and it looks like we’ve got no viable upgrade path, does that seem right to you lot? Guess we’ll have to get whole new machines…

You might find more answers here on the Color forum:

[Simmie] “both on AGP, as our machines are pre-PCI Express.”

    Simmie,

In between the G5s with AGP and PCIe were a vast number of G5s that used PCIx cards. In fact, the majority of the dual processor MACs produced after the very ones were all PCIx. If your machines are PCIx then there’s hope, as there may be some PCIx cards capable of running Color. Which G5s do you have?

Sounds like with your X850 XT you have as good as you’re going to get with the AGP-based PowerMacs. We tried to buy one of those and there’s really nothing left on the market. It’s virtually impossible to find a new 9800 PRO as well. Unfortunately it sounds like the only answer to get a video card good enough to work with Color is to upgrade to the newer Mac Pro lines and get at the PCI-Express cards.

We have been running FinalTouch on a G5 PCI-X with an ATI X800XT.
I believe it will still run the new “Color” with it….

Our machines are indeed PCI-X – but the graphics card is definately still on an AGP bus. As far as I know you can’t get/put a PCI-X GFX card in a mac with AGP. Or am I wrong about this?

Thanks – good to know. Looks like Apple have changed the spec slightly on their website, guess I’ll have to wait till Studio starts shipping to see what does and doesn’t work…

Our G5 Dual 2.0 is running an ATI x800XT card and it runs the current Final Touch HD (which is now Color) and in fact I delivered 6 HD episodes off of that machine. ATI is much better supported by Color than nVidia.

That’s good to hear. However the Apple website seems to say that to run Color on a G5 you will need one of the following:

    ATI Radeon X1600
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT, 7600 GT, 7300 GT, 6800 Ultra DDL, 6800 GT DDL, 6600, or Quadro FX 4500

    https://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html

    Think they’ve changed the requirements?
