  • Color Checker Chart for Video

I’ve got one of these little color checker charts that I use for photography with my 7D and I love it muchly:

I’m wondering, can I use it for video as well? I know I can use it as a neutral point to balance off of, but I have Lightroom plugins that are really useful for correcting more accurately, based on the software detecting the color chart in the image. I’m wondering if there’s something similar for video post production, specifically FCP X, After Effects, etc.

Does anyone else use a color checker chart for video?

You could use “Color Finesse” which ships with After Effects.

I use my color checker with video. it is very useful for matching footage between locations before adding my grading effects.

What tools do you use to match color?

[Stephanie Stiavetti] “What tools do you use to match color?”

In AE I use primarily the built-in effects (levels, curves, hue/saturation), Synthetic Apertures “Color Finesse” and Magic Bullets “Colorista”. In most NLEs (in my case Premiere Pro and AVID) I use the Three-Way-Colour-Corrector.

If you’re interested in that subject:
Since I’m trying get more into Color Correction, I discovered two great books about colour correction from Focal Press by Steve Hullfish (“Color Correction For Video” and “The Art And Technique Of Digital Color Correction”). I think there are reviews of them here on the COW. Great books with very deep insight and very well written too.

Nice, there’s a new edition of “The Art And Technique Of Digital Color Correction” coming out:

If I can only get one book, which do you think is best?

Thanks, Anna, for that tip! I’ll definitly check it out. I only know and own the two books I mentioned plus about a hundred (well, dozend) of more general filmmaking/editing/postproduction books.

Looked at the table of contents on amazon and it seems to be a great guide.
    So, thanks again!
