  • color bar for Blackmagic 10bit RGB 4:4:4??

Using Blackmagic decklink HD pro (dual link), JVC’s DT-V1910CG/U Multi-format HDTV monitor and Final Touch HD, I’m trying to color correct a feature that was onlined at 1080p24 Blackmagic 10bit RGB 4:4:4. I’ve noticed that when I displayed FCP’s HD color bar from 10bit RGB 4:4:4 timeline the reading on the video scope looked off, see https://www.solventdreams.com/Picture_1.jpg Shouldn’t it look like this? https://www.solventdreams.com/Picture_2.jpg

I assume it has something to do with differences between YUV and RGB color space, but if that’s the case how do I calibrate my monitor for 10bit RGB 4:4:4 color space? Is there any color bar or reference that can be used for my monitor??

My plan thus far is to color correct the material at RGB space, render and conform at 10bit RGB in FCP and output a TIFF image sequence for film out (I will do a quick DI session at the lab before printing to film), and convert 10bit RGB 4:4:4 material to Blackmagic 10bit (4:2:2 YUV color space) for D-5 output… (I’m thinking of doing this by outputting a reference file from FCP after the conform and render the movie to Blackmagic 10bit using Shake).

I was wondering if any of the creative cow gurus out there see a flaw in my color correcting and delivery workflow, as I am little bit uncertain if i’m doing them appropriately.

    I appreciate any thoughts…

We had the same issue, but when we captured bars from the SRW deck, they were fine. I think it’s a problem within Final Cut where the bars and black generated in final cut were incorrect.

    Thanks Matt for replying,

When you say you captured the bars from SRW deck, do you mean you had SR deck generate the bars and capture it or was the bar recorded from the camera?

I’m still not sure how everyone is able to calibrate the HD monitor for RGB color space. This issue has been a mystery from the start, and I have posted my quandaries several times to this site, but no one seems to know the answer. Considering my first priority is to output a tiff sequence for film out, I thought it’s best to color correct everything at 4:4:4 RGB. But may be I should consider color correcting for BM 10bit YUV? (at least I know how to calibrate my monitor for that)

    Any thoughts?

We set up the SRW to output bars in 4:4:4 and captured them live. When we looked at them in the Final Cut “software scopes” they looked like they should (your picture 2).

I believe your effort to color correct in 10-bit RGB is prudent. I’m not familiar with the JVC monitor that you’re using, but if it’s a CRT, it should be able to display the RGB properly. The only thing I’d be wary of are your blacks (as you probably already know).

How do you like the Final Touch HD setup? I’ve been doing more color correcting on our projects and tried to check them out at NAB, but they were a little hard to get with.
