I have a 2.7 ghz power mac. I’ve upgraded final cut studio through 5 up to the crossover to intel and then to 6. When I try to start Color it says Open GL not able to start turnoff ‘video desktop’. (the same programme runs on my octo core intel mac)
Question 1: Will color run on power PC macs and
Question 2. how do I turn off video desktop whatever that is and
Question 3. why does it conflict with open GL
Question 4. Is there a color forum and why can’t I see it if there is ?
The answer to three of course is not that important
Thanks in advance

You need the proper Graphics Card for Color to operate. See the minimum specs in the documentation.

In the User Preferences of Color.
[Terry Flaxton] “Question 4. Is there a color forum and why can’t I see it if there is ?”
Yep, it’s been running a little over a year now.

If you hit the COW homepage, you’ll find a listing of all the forums now running, about 120 I believe.

October 3, 2007 at 4:31 pmThanks Walter. I actually run a decklink card and a D Link that powers my 23 inch apple display so I put in simple graphic cards to run my other two monitors – so does this mean I have to upgrade from the current one which is an ATI Radeon 9650.
So, to be specific the message is:
Open to intitialize Open GL – make sure video desktop is disabled
Of course I can’t start color to disable video desktop – do I just go buy another graphics card ?
Sorry for being stupid – best, Terry Flaxton

I think so, but what do the application specs say for your machine?

October 3, 2007 at 5:30 pmActually Walter – I don’t even have to look: they say: “You already spent a load of dough, sucker, now you got to spend some more”
I’ll run Color on the octo cor with the big fat graphics card and my HD stuff on my old 2.7 with the decklink
Thanks for all your help…

Are you kidding me? They gave you Color for Free. Before Apple purchased Silicon Color Final Touch, it was priced as follows:
SD – $995
HD – $4,995
2K – $24,995That version of Color included in the Studio 2 price is the 2K version. So no, you haven’t spent much dough at all.

October 4, 2007 at 6:33 amFirst of all, switch off desktop preview in the Decklink card, that’s what’s causing your error message.
Second, you should get an ATI X1900 graphics card, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Your Octo is a great machine, but Color relies heavily on the GPU.
Plus, serious color grading doesn’t come cheap. You’ll need a good reference monitor (which can cost you more than the whole system) and one day you may want a controller (for the price of your whole cMac) if you are ever going to do a full feature length
