Color 1.5 Rocks
Posted by Ernie Santella on August 3, 2009 at 2:47 pmI just installed the new Final Cut Studio. Went through some of the new versions of the programs and all I have to say is Color rocks now. I messed around with it in the last Studio version and it was WAY over my head. So intimidating that I just avoided it. But, this version 1.5 is amazing. It’s so much easier to use. Sure, I don’t know everything it has to offer yet, but doing basic color correction is much simpler. Plus, the ease of sending/saving back to FCP is a breeze.

August 3, 2009 at 4:21 pmIt’s good to hear something positive about FCS3.
I haven’t tried Color since it was Final Touch. I never even opened the app in FCS2 because my colleagues warned me that it was so jam packed with issues for long format projects. I guess it’s time to try it again.
cheers,

August 3, 2009 at 4:26 pmI just color corrected a 2 minute video and was amazed how easy to do basic CC. I didn’t dig too deep, just overall touch-up. When you ‘Send to Color’ it’s instant. All the shots appear on the Color timeline, similar to FCP. Just click on each shot, do your adjustments and Save back to FCP.
Thank you Apple for making this so user friendly!

August 3, 2009 at 6:36 pmi found it very easy to use 3 way color corrector in FCP for my primary color, then send to COLOR for all the secondary color correction. it’s a really fantastic tool that you can really delve deep into.

August 3, 2009 at 7:06 pmHave they actually changed anything in regards to the UI? From what I’ve read it’s the same thing given they have improved the send to / from and the rendering in Color. Would be interesting to hear cause this can be a point of “why to upgrade” for some people.

August 3, 2009 at 7:07 pmHow does Color interperate the 3-way color corrector, as you primary in?

August 3, 2009 at 8:05 pmThe last Color Corrector 3-way filter applied to any clip is converted into a Primary In correction in Color. When you send the project back to Final Cut Pro, all Color Corrector 3-way filters will have been removed from your project.

August 3, 2009 at 8:54 pmNo, I just checked my timeline. It does not remove ANY filters. All my original color correction filters are still in place.

August 4, 2009 at 2:18 pmMost people recommend avoiding combining your color grades with the 3 way CC. I sometimes will apply the 3-way during an edit, just so I (and the client) can see the images closer to what they’ll look like when they get the final treatment, then “remove attributes…” before sending to Color. So far it seems the workflow has been much streamlined in Color 1.5.
I agree: Color rocks! I’ve been dismayed by all the vitriolic negativity about Studio 3. FC is a stable, mature professional application that I’ve been fortunate enough to make a living with for quite a few years now. The new version is even better. What’s all the fuss about?
