AE Collect feature locks up your workstation, so I am trying to use AErender.exe to do it in the background but it doesn’t want to play ball, is this even possible do you think? Has anyone tried the same, or is there another solution? Here is what I have so far – at the moment a simple modification of a background render run command with a collect prompt and destination.

    “C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects 2022\Support Files\AErender.exe” -project “C:\path\to\your\project.aep” -collect -output “C:\path\to\destination\folder”

I don’t think there’s a command line option to collect files, and there’s no scripting interface for Collect Files, either.

There are two options I can think of that are close to what you want to do if you’re willing to do some scripting.

    1. Write your own “collect files” logic in a script (identify assets, copy them to a location, reconnect each item to the new footage location), and call it from a separate instance of AfterFX.exe from the command line.

    2. Save your AEPs as XML, and write a script or tool to parse the AEPX file for paths, copy files to new location, and update the XML with the new paths.

Thanks Walter. I think that a little beyond what I was looking for, but appreciate the the logic and thought behind it.

It feels like a wish list item for AE development to be able to continue work while a project is collecting and not have to wait for its completion.
