I am trying to collage video in AE. I am having trouble using the mask feature, and making the part that I don’t mask transparent in the video on top. It ends up black after I mask it. The Videos I want to use I exported from Final Cut. They are in .mov format. I can animate the mask in the video stacked on top…. but how to make the background transparent, or erase part of the video so you can see the one below it?

    Does anyone know the solution?

When you make a new mask, it defaults to a mask mode that makes portions of the image transparent so perhaps you just haven’t turned on the transparency grid visibility in the comp viewer, which would mean you will see the black default background color instead of the transparency grid even though the area is actually transparent.

Sorry, I don’t recall off-hand what the icon looks like, but if you are not entirely familiar with the various controls in AE, it might benefit you to turn on the “tool tips” in preferences so you can just hover your mouse over a control to see what it does.

For what I understand, you would like the mask to work the other way around?
next to the mask-controls in your layer there is this button that sais “add” and next to it
a checkbox “inverted”. with these two controls you can have the mask behave as you wish.
