Codec-install question
Posted by Stewart Bourke on October 12, 2013 at 9:17 amVEgas Pro 12 user.
I am looking to install a codec to allow me view RAW files from my olympus camera.
Slightly OT, but I just wanted to see if there were any opinions on the codec pack called the ‘FastPictureViewer’ pack from a company called Axel Rietschin Software Developments.
I am very aware of the danger of installing third-party codecs on my system, but this pack seems to have had some good reviews, and on a different machine I trialled just the raw viewer and it works fine.
Their website specifically makes reference to Vegas, and so before having a go (and creating the necessary restore points etc) I wanted to ask if anybody else had used it (or had any recommendations for allowing Olympus RAW files be viewed/thumbnailed in explorer)
Many thanks for any feedback etc.
Thanks,

[Stewart Bourke] “I am looking to install a codec to allow me view RAW files from my olympus camera.”
__________________________________________________________________Well, Stewart, reading the VP12 Import options:Support for RAW photo files SCS says:-
“Use RAW photo files in your Vegas projects. Download the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack for Windows 7 and Windows Vista to view and edit RAW photo files from more than 120 DSLR cameras natively on the Vegas Pro timeline.“
You fancy doing that? We need a Guinea-Pig! – I’m tempted to leave well alone and use Corel or Picassa to convert.
What are you trying to achieve that you need Vegas to do this heavy lifting anyway?

Before you try any codec pack take an image of your system disc.
OK a restore point will help, but an image is always a failsafe. If things really go wrong you are up and running in around 20 minutes or so.Please let us know how you get on with the codec pack.

October 12, 2013 at 11:41 amGrazie,
Thanks for the pointer for the MS stuff – I missed this completely. I am happier to take a chance with MS stuff.
I am working with RAW files more and more recently – between my own camera and files that I get from others, so wanted to be able to work with them natively. My photo-editing applications are on the same machine as VP, and I was more concerned with the potential pollution of Vegas
Geoff’s advice re the system image is good – I am doing that now, and will post an update when done.
Thanks again for all the info.

October 12, 2013 at 4:04 pmSo far, so good.
Created the necessary backups, installed the pack, am now able to use the raw files in paint.net, and they show thumbnails in Windows explorer.
Will work away as usual and watch rendering.
Thanks again everybody for the advice.

October 12, 2013 at 10:06 pmI installed these many moons ago. Although I have not installed the latest, I have never seen any problem whatsoever in Vegas. Bear in mind that raw files in my world are not video files, and the chances that Vegas has a codec to read the raw file from a Canon 5D Mark III are probably somewhere between “ain’t going to happen” and “No way”.

October 13, 2013 at 2:59 amI install the MS Photo Codec pack on all of my workstations. Not only does it provide thumbnails for my Canon RAW images, many video formats present a thumbnail as well.

[Steve Rhoden] “I too also recommend installing the Microsoft Camera Codec pack.”
_______________________________________________________________Steve, which of these 2 files do I install? I have Win7 64bit and VP12. I see that there is a refernce to “AMD” in the 64bit. My CPU is INTEL.
Cheers
