  • Codec for YUV/WMV HD video file

Posted by Kyle Davis on February 22, 2010 at 3:52 pm

    Hello all,

I used Windows Media Encoder to create an HD WMV video of some software training I’m developing. (It wasn’t my first choice, but it was the ONLY screen capture software that did not interfere with our software drag-n-drop.)

I saved the file onto my external hard drive and it plays fine from my PC. So, I move it over to my mac, and wanted to use it in FCP.

I know I should have tested it to make sure it played in QT before I copied, but too late. I already spent several hours (over the weekend) getting it copied over from my external HD to my mac. So, it doesn’t play, even in WMP (which I have on my mac).

I used MediaInfo, and it says:

I’m hoping there is some sort of codec I can download or else a converter for Mac. I really, really, REALLY don’t want to transfer these files over USB again.

Thanks a LOT for your help,

    Kyle

    Hi Kile,
I don’t think you can open that in Mac OSX.
    These are Windows files.
Is not a matter of codecs but computers and systems.
    You need some cross-platform solution.

Ok, then can you tell me what format I should convert my HD video into? What’s good for use in FCP? I’ll need something I can create in windows and copy over, preferably a format that doesn’t take 3 years to do over USB, but I don’t want my video to look like crap after editing, etc.

You can transcode to any of the free codecs that works in PC and Mac: The BlackMagic, AJA, or AVID.
Another solution is to convert to Still Sequence. PNG, TIFF or even JPEG works in both sides.
Once in FC you reexport them as QT movies.

That’s great, except these are all QT codecs, and I can open my wmv file in QT to convert.

Whatever the way, you need to do the conversion in a PC or Mac with Windows.
I guess that any NLE in a PC will be able to ropen and transcode the files.

Any idea why the codec doesn’t seem to even work in windows for anything besides WMP (and perhaps Vegas Studio, which doesn’t export to HD in my version)?

Because Microsoft is notorious for using proprietary formats to lock in dependence on Windows Media Player. Microsoft has a long history of abhorring open standards that challenge its dominance.

    Some history:

Have you tried downloading Flip for Mac? The reader is free but if you want to encode/transcode you have to pay for that (can’t remember how much it costs.
