    problem…

i’ve a mov file which can not be recognised by fcp only the audio. fcp says codec could not be opened.
you would say. convert te file to something more convenient for fcp. but that is the problem

i’ve tried, MPEG streamclip, handbrake, visual hub, compressor, squeeze, i just cannot convert it to something workable

also none of the video player i’ve played it with shows, video( only audio) execpt VLC itplays it perfectly

what compressor is used for this file? i do not know, when i import it in fcp it shows this hope the picture is attached

im working on a intel imac 10.5.8
    fcp version 7.0
anyone any suggestions execpt for resending the file by the distributor ( not an option)

In cases like yours my tool of last resort is always Adobe Media Encoder CS5. If it couldn’t transcode media into editable format I’d throw away that file and ask the folk I got it from to reencode it for me with fcp requirements in mind.

If you have access to a PC, gspot.exe – https://www.headbands.com/gspot/ – will tell you the codec.

…and SUPER – https://majorgeeks.com/Super_d5117.html – will change it for you. Sadly neither work on a Mac.

    SD PAL Upper First.
Which kind of stuff are you dealing with?
Open the file with QT Player and have a look to the Info Window.
    Tell us what is there.

I guess that if you install the Avid Codec PE package you’ll be able to transcode it with something like MPEG Streamclip. The codec package should be on Avid’s website in the support section, otherwise google for it.

Install “Perian” and try with MPGStreamclip. or QT.

thanks for the suggestions and quick responses…

tried to find the Avid Codec PE package, but could not find it so downloaded the LE pack instead.. did not work. the Versio of perian Rafael suggested was allready installed on my system so did not work either.

isn’t there a way to work around avid files on a mac in general?

Usually it’s a matter of exporting the files from Avid in a format that works with mac as only a few codecs are readable by both systems.

(Sorry, it looks like Avid’s PE set of codecs is only available for registered users, I didn’t notice that first time).

There’s a few workflow variations that you can have a go at, but I can’t guarantee success. More codecs are available through FFmpeg, so you might get lucky there, and it might be worth trying to transcode on a pc rather than on the mac (if you have access to a windows pc). It’s possible, though, that the only way will be to load the file into another Avid and export it again.

Right, the codec you are looking for is the AVID MPEG 50/IMX that is in the PE package.
Sorry for suggesting Perian. I mistook Avid by AVI.
