Hello to all -I’m new to the forums! Seems a great place with many great people onboard – like many I come seeking help!

I have recently had a nasty bite from win32/virut – but managed to get back into one of my 4 machines that were totalled.
The media files are fine, it corrupted some REG files and nailed a few other programs.
    My problem is:
One on machine I copied all media and .veg project files (vegas7) onto an external drive and hooked this up to another machine that is still working (but limping).
The .veg project loaded naturally and started looking for files – of which I chose to ignore manually.
Now, when I select them in the timeline, then in the media ‘pool’ below – the majority are there. But, some are missing ‘media offline’ etc.
That’s fine – I then grab and replace them from the source and they theoretically should drop in.
But they wont and just show an icon and refuse to drop in to the timeline, but will play in vlc etc outside vegas.
They were standard rendered files in avi.

Is there a possibilty I have lost my pack of codecs that vegas recognises (as they were all fine in the last machine)?
If so can someone point me there please so I can get some sleep.
I have an animated film to deliver that’s like a busted jigsaw…

Your thanks and comments appreciated wholeheartedly in advance.

“Is there a possibilty I have lost my pack of codecs that vegas recognises (as they were all fine in the last machine)?”

    Probably.

If Vegas doesn’t recognize them, then they’re probably not “standard” codecs (at least not in the world of editing). Most likely they are Divx or Xvid, but only you can tell us for sure.

That said, ffdshow is a good option for getting non-standard codecs working in Vegas — and without installing codec packs which, frankly, usually cause more harm than good.

First, figure out what codecs are being used by those files — GSpot’s good for that.

Next download and install ffdshow. Then run its VFW Configuration app. There, locate the codecs on the Decoder tab and change the third (maybe it’s the second?) column from Disabled to libavcodec. Exit out of the VFW Configuration app and start (or restart) Vegas.

    Hello again

    Thanks for that Rob.
The original files are going to be fun – the infected machine that I’m taking all from – has the files on it.
As they were stopmotion animation, I had previously processed some in virtual dub and some other programs – so the list of codecs goes wild from here – huffy, etc, etc.
I did install the ffdshow – but perhaps selected the wrong format (as you have guided me now correctly).
I’ll uninstall said app and try once more.

Thank you for the swift and knowledgeable response

    Hello again

    Thanks for that tip Rob.
I found that from recollection, I had run the avi’s through Virtual Dub with a light filter then rendered as HuffyUV Lossless – obviously in an attempt to keep the image as clean as possible.
When I ran Gspot – thats all I needed to know – so I installed the FFshow and the codec as above and bingo! all the files now line up!

This has made a young man growing old feel a lot younger.
Thank you once again for all the help and prompt response.
And no thanks to the old win32/virut – I have never seen such a ferocious pig in all my life…

Keep well all – now my top bookmark for all.

    Too true Steve 😉

At least there’s a great place like this to learn and share knowledge. I have browsed here a few times before and have been increasinlgy drawn to it. It truly is a wonderful resource for tips on all manner of things video/sware/equipment.

My level of knowledge is realistically and practically increasing due to this ‘happy sharing of brainpower’. Right on the nut.
My expertise may only extend to making tea, but one day, maybe one day….

Thanks to all again for such a nice welcome.
    The kettles on.
