    Blackmagic’s Support Article 197 states:

“If a VTR supports the output of closed captioning data, you will be able to capture the video output with closed captioning using the supported Blackmagic Design hardware. In order verify that closed captioning is captured correctly, you can use Quicktime Player’s “Show Closed Captioning” option. This feature is supported in Quicktime v7.6 or newer.”

I’ve tried both a Multibridge Pro 2 and a Decklink HD Extreme 2, on different Macs, capturing an SD source with both Prores HQ and Uncompressed 10 bit, hoping to get the captions as described.

The captured files, when played out of Final Cut, have the captions, and the monitors decode it. Quicktime, however, does not. So, the advice in the article to use QT’s “Show Closed Captioning” either is faulty, or something isn’t working as it is supposed to. In QT’s prefs, captions are set to display; in the View menu, however, the option is grayed out, which I believe indicates that they aren’t there.

Can anyone advise me on what might be the problem?

    Thanks

Are you using QT 7.6+ or QT X?

With 10.6, QT X is the default QT player – 7.6 needs to be installed manually.

7.6.6, but I did try X; no success.

    Thanks
