Activity Forums Avid Media Composer Closed Captioning?

  • Closed Captioning?

My reason for posting here is that AVID gurus (along with discreet/autodesk pros) tend to have more technical expertise and industry awareness than most, so I realize this is not an AVID specific request and apologize for using this forum if it may not be the best or most relevant place for this.

Is there an online resource to detail the closed captioning process – specific to dvd production as opposed to broadcast, and are there multiple platforms for doing this? What are the most common processes, practices and software available for doing this, and what efforts do they entail?

Is this available in all dvd authoring software, or is it a special additional package that is outside normal authoring?

Are there reasons other than time and money considerations that this is not a more common/standard practice?

Let me know what’s out there. Thanks!

Check out http://www.cpcweb.com/ They make closed captioning software and have a lot of good info on the entire process.

To do captioning for DVD authoring, you create a closed caption project in Caption Maker Pro, and then export an .scc file. That is imported into your DVD authoring software. Not all DVD authoring software has the capability to import caption data. Sometimes the decision is made instead to create DVD subtitles, which also can be exprted from Caption Maker.
