    Hi there!

with the new captioning regulations, we are for the first time having to send masters to the US with closed captioning. I’ve looked around for software to do this and I’ve only found one, which is rather expensive since our demad is only for a few music videos going to MTV Tempo. I’m interested in seeing if anyone has any recommendations, either for software, or for facillities that will do it for us.

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

If you’re refering to MacCaption, yup, that’s the only software out there for captioning with a Mac and FCP. If you have PC’s available, there are a few more options out there.

If you want a service to do it for you expect to pay about $10/min. (US $) And there are hundreds of services out there. I say to just do a google search for them, call a few, and pick the one that requires the LEAST amount of time and effort on your end. (ie, many providers require a VHS timcoded window dub of the project, wich takes time and tape, others do not. They only need your master tape, go with them, it’s likey that they have more sofisticated equipment and can provide a better service.) We’re currently paying $10/min, but we’re going to buy MacCaption soon. Over the course of a year it will save us thousands…

If you decide to go with a service, I recommend CaptionMax. They have offices all over the country.

They have great customer service, and they are really really really good at the art of captioning.

Disclaimer, I used to work for Max a decade or so ago when he was post supervisor at a large-ish facility. He’s a great guy. But even if I didn’t know him, I’d still use CaptionMax because they are very good at what they do!
