Clone Stamp tracking – when track point is NOWHERE near the clone stamp?
Posted by Mac Caudill on April 22, 2014 at 9:50 pmClone stamp tracking seems to be easy & straightforward when the track point is the same as the clone stamp target like in this video:

Can you tell me what you do if the track point is nowhere near the clone/paint target area? In my case, I have a clone effect that needs to be tracked, but my best track point is on the other side of the frame. I found this thread which suggests using expressions but they don’t work:

Is there an “offset” setting or a way to do this in AE without using mocha?

April 22, 2014 at 11:54 pmWhy not use mocha? As long as the movement you are tracking is moving on a “relative plane”, it is quite simple to do a quick track in mocha and apply it to a Null to create an offset track.
Good luck,

April 23, 2014 at 12:17 amCan’t afford to buy Mocha at this point. Was hoping AE would be able to handle it.

April 23, 2014 at 12:27 amI hope you can afford free… mocha AE has been bundled free with AE since CS4.
If you are running CS6 or CC, simply select a layer and go to Animation menu> track in mocha AE.
If you are running CS4 or CS5 you will find the mocha AE application inside your AE application folder.
– enjoy!

April 23, 2014 at 12:28 amIf the source for the clone moves in a different manner to the target then you will need to track them separately. An Expression can only help if the movement can be described in a simple linear manner.
Otherwise, a separate track is required and it’s really no different from tracking the target for the clone routine.

April 23, 2014 at 1:06 amThanks for the tips! I’m running CS4 so I’ll have to check the folder. Hopefully this will do it. Thanks!

April 24, 2014 at 7:39 amI tried using Mocha for CS4 and it won’t import any clips. I simply select NEW PROJECT. Then browse to the .mov clip I’m trying to track. I made sure the frame rate was correct (23.976) and nothing but black shows up in the mocha window/viewer. I tried a few other QT files which play fine in FCP, Avid and After Effects. Same thing: just a black screen. Wondering, is this version of mocha too old to work with a MacPro tower?

April 24, 2014 at 2:15 pmOlder version (mocha AE CS4) may not support all formats. Simply convert your clip to a jpeg sequence.
This tech note will help: https://www.imagineersystems.com/support/Documentation/supported-file-formats.

April 24, 2014 at 7:55 pmYikes! I just figured QT was pretty standard. I’ll try a conversion tonight and see what happens. Thanks so much for bearing with me!

April 26, 2014 at 7:46 amI exported an image seq out of AE. However, mocha doesn’t recognize it as a “sequence” and only lets me import one still of the sequence. Actually the only format that my version of mocha recognizes is a “dv stream” which isn’t going to work (project is HD). I’m guessing that version of mocha was a beta version or something, with limited capabilities.
