  • Clips with scale effect turn black unrendered

I just installed my IO with v3 drivers from AJA support site. It captured 10bit uncompressed beautifully and seemed to playback fine. But when I put a scale effect on a clip in the timeline it doesn’t seem to work. I even turned off external video to make sure there was trouble with the IO. Trashed preferences a few times. Restarted. This is the problem:

Double clicking the clip doesn’t bring up the image in the viewer–it’s black (although the scopes may show what appears to be a normal display). If I adjust the scale a notch, then it disappears from the canvas window as well until I render it. These are all 10bit clips. I have better, but still weird results if I make my backgrounds checkerboard in the viewer and canvas, but I still get green screens and funky scaled video with split green posterized video frames in the canvas when trying to playback an unrendered clip in the timeline that’s green, or when trying to reposition a clip with the selector in the canvas with image/wireframe on.
If I put these clips in a DV or a DV50 timeline, none of these problems appear. I can double click the clip and it will load into the viewer and I can move the clip in the canvas window and see it fine.

How can I fix this so I can edit?

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (R350) w/128MB VRAM for display.
    QT 7.1.2
    OS 10.4.7
    FCP 5.1.1

    Love,
    Jeff

Make sure that you are set to image+wireframe and not just wireframe in the drop down menu of both your viewer and canvas. It’s the one that looks like a little square.

Also, when working in 10bit, alpha channels get funky. Is this clip video or otherwise? If it has an alpha, play with the alpha type (change it from straight or pre-multiplied).

This seems to be a problem with 10 bit timelines only. Also, did you run the AJA io uninstaller before running the v3 driver installer?

I am set to image+wireframe. These are straight video clips (BetaCam SP), no alpha. In fact I have a tiff with an alpha in the timeline that seems just fine (no disappearing tricks or funky green video).
I did not run the uninstaller for v3 as this was the first time I installed the IO on my machine. Should I have installed the disc that came with it first? Or should I have gone straight to the v3 download off the web alone (as I did)?

Going stright to v3 is fine. Did you do a firmware update in your install?

NO. How do I do that?

Download and install the control panel and it will update the firmware:

Did the control panel download and install, but there was no message that the firmware needed to be upgraded. Indicated running 24-28.

Yeah, that’s the latest. Have you tried an uninstall and reinstall of the drivers? Better yet, try uninstalling the drivers, work with your project (see if you get the disappearing act), if it seems all good, then reinstall the drivers. Did you run FCP at least once before installing the AJA drivers?
