Clips showing up as black
I would consider myself experienced with this program but I’m stumped on this one. I’m having an issue that I’ve come across a couple of times now and don’t know how to fix it. My video file (as well as my audio file, since the audio is detached from that video file) are showing up as black screens, which leads me to wonder if they somehow got corrupted. I don’t know what to do nor how they became this way. Hopefully this screenshot helps.
The clip entitled “Interview 2 – Charles (and sign) Dick – Charles” is the black one. What confuses me further is that even the source video file (top left) is showing up as black as well. When I load an old Final Cut Backup in Finder, Home (My Name), Movies, Final Cut Backups, etc… the black screen on those files is gone. This was when I loaded up a very old backup of the library, though. I’ve yet to figure out exactly when it started showing up as black images. Any help? -

I’ll start by asking the usual… have you tried deleting the render files? I’ve found most weird stuff like that comes from a corrupt render. If not try re-linking the media and / or resetting preferences.

Forgive me if this sounds dumb, but by deleting the render files, wouldn’t that delete the media and/or project?
In theory, I assume it would just delete the render files but keep the project intact, and would just have to simply render all of it again, -
If you select your project and look under the file menu, you’ll see the option to remove your render files. Theses are all the files created in the background above and beyond your original and optimised media. These include things like the thumbnails that FCPX shows when you look at a clip, the audio waveforms, etc.
Deleting these so FCPX has to remake them will flush out any corrupt background renders. Copying the project to a new library and choosing not to copy the render files will also achieve the same thing if you’re worried about media going missing.

I’ve tried deleting render files and then re-rendering, but still no luck 🙁

I’m not sure what you mean by “re-link media’ nor do I know which preferences to reset?

I’ve also tried re-linking and it was unsuccessful. I just came up with this idea, though. In theory, this makes sense to me: what if I went into an old fcpx backup where the file is not showing up as black and replaced it with the one that is showing up as black on the recent backup? Would my clips then be referencing that fixed file? Also, an additional thing to note is that only the first half of the clip is black, which is even weirder to me.

Hey, I just wanted to follow up with you, and tell you that I fixed the problem when I called Apple. I’m going to explain it in detail, though for those who may have the same problem. I had somehow gone into my video file in the timeline and disabled it, thus resulting in a black screen, whereas if I disabled it in the editor, it would have just grayed the clip out. What I did to fix it was right-click on the file in the Event Browser, click “Open In Timeline” and re-enable the clip there. It fixed my problem completely! Thanks Jeff, for you help, though!

Glad you got it fixed. That’s not something I’d have even thought of. You can do a lot of handy things by opening the source clip as a timeline and making changes but disabling the video probably isn’t one of them 🙂
