So we’re having a few peculiar, irregular but frequent problems. Running two edit suites, both 2008 Mac Pros, and both having these issues. Both running footage off the same (HD Element) RAID drive over a network.

    So the problem is this:
Starting a few days ago, sequences will suddenly show black (and once white) in the canvas. It will effect some but not all footage in the sequence. Transitions, for example, are usually okay. If you double click the clip it will display correctly in the viewer. If you play the sequence, it will play the audio.

All footage is the same format/codec, pro res sequence, HD 1080. The sequence will have been perfectly fine for days or weeks beforehand. Nothing has been added/changed to the Mac Pros or to the projects other than usual edits.

    It is not:
Image/wireframe, RGB, or alpha, RT/safe, etc. Have checked all of these, and toggled settings. As I said, it’s effecting two different suites with different user settings.

What fixes it, is to ‘un-render’ the clip. e.g. change the opacity and change it back. I imagine trashing the render files would do the same. The latest weirdness to start today is that it will now display completely different footage. My episode 18 sequence was suddenly displaying episode 16. On the other computer a lunch scene was replaced with a completely different bit of footage.

We can fix this as the problem crops up, but we still don’t know what is causing it. And would love to fix the cause of the problem. We’re pretty sure it’s a render problem, but no idea why it’s suddenly started. We’ve been working with this set-up for 5 months now (on this Raid, and over a year previously with another raid). No recent changes to hardware, only two new bits of software installed (Red Giant Holomatrix & NewBlueFX).

    Please help! We’re stumped!!!

Okay, so we’ve just emptied our render folders. Deleted 800Gb from one computer and 150Gb on the other. Maybe that’s the problem? Could the two systems be overlapping on naming render files? Or could FCP be struggling to access them?? Any ideas?

Are you simply sharing one drive over afp? Are you sharing media and projects?

Trashing render files helps a lot when you starting seeing odd bits of media. Render files are named after sequences and fcp screws it up sometimes.
